Last month, blogger Heather Armstrong, who writes for the immensely popular parenting blog Dooce in the US, gave the appliance giant Maytag a public relations scare after she asked her million or so followers to boycott the brand after her recently purchased $1,300 washing machine stopped working.
After days of delays with Maytag repairmen, and a particularly bad row with Maytag's customer call centre, Ms Armstrong wrote on her blog: "Okay then, I say, almost begging at this point, almost to the point of tears, is there anyone I can talk to who might see what I've been through and understand?

Nationwide Marketing Group appliance dealers in the US this week got the first glimpse of Maytag's new Fresh Hold Option with Dynamic Venting Technology, a feature that helps prevent clothes that sit in a damp front-load washing machine from smelling like mildew.
"This feature will force all other manufacturers to follow Maytag," said Adam Thomas, Nationwide's senior vice president of appliance marketing.

Maytag: More Fridges Recalled In The United States
Whirlpool Corporation has added additional brands of refrigerator to its recall due to an electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor.
This can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard, we've seen footage of one actually on fire!

ERT Weekly has reported that Maytag's business is to be integrated with that of Whirlpool in the UK leading to the closure of its Redhill, Surrey, base.
During next month, all sales, marketing and after-sales service functions for Maytag will move to Whirlpool's UK headquarters in Croydon while its logistics operations will transfer to Whirlpool's distribution centre in Aylesford, Kent.
