Fisher and Paykel Smartdrive GW603

Postby jfdubos » Thu May 10, 2007 12:52 pm

I am new so please help me

I have a ~10yr old Fisher and Paykel GW603-U

I have followed the instructions to get it into diagnostic mode -
ie. Hold "Wash Temp Down", then press "Power". Wait for the two short "beeps", Toggle the "Spin" buttons until "Hold" and "Slow Spin" lamps are lit.
If there is a fault, it will now be displayed on the wash lamps across the top of the control panel.

To read any code displayed, start at the right and note which lamps are lit. It's a binary code; ie : 1+2+4+8+16+32+64+128. Add up the ones which are lit to give the last fault code.

Unfortunately when I hold "Wash temp down" and then press "Power" (switching the machine on) all the lights on the panel light up for about 5 seconds, there are no beeps, and then the machine just displays the high and low water level lamps and nothing else.

If I then select the spin speeds "Hold" and "Slow" no more lights come on the top panel - am I doing something wrong?

Once when I did this and then powered off again, the 5 left lights in the top wash section went on even though the machine was off.

I have noticed that whens I try to goto diag mode, if I then hit hot or cold water again, it pours water into my machine (hot or cold) - similarly if i hit spin the red spin light comes on and the machine seems to be pumping water out of the bowl (but does not spin)

The actual problem I have is that when I put the clothes and detergent into the machine, power on and select the wash I want (say regular) - all the lights are displaying as usual but nothing happens when I press start - other than the leftmost wash light stopping blinking, but the machine doesnt start.

The machine was doing this a few weeks ago and then for no apparent reason started working fine again - now its stopped working again and I can't get it go.

Please help!! :(

If you can operate the valves and pump from the control panel, you have entered the diagnostics side of the machine successfully. I can only assume that no code showed on the wash board. This means that no error code has been recorded. If that is the case, the lid switch and the Out of Balance switch will be the prime suspects. Both suffer from corrosion and dodgy wiring.

Which bit of "Unplug it" is causing the problem?

Hi Penguin

Thanks for your reply

If it is the out of balance or lid switches, what to do next?

I can see a blue and black wire running from a 4pin plug in the controller unit to the front right hand side of the machine - I assume these wires are connecting to the lid sensor, probably at the front of the machine??

The 4 pin plug has 2 other wires that seem to run in under the controller - coloured yellow and black from memory?

How would I short out the black and blue wires? - I am assuming cut them both, twist them together, and cover with electrical tape?

What I am guessing is that the black and blue pair of wires running out of the right most 4 pin connector control the lid sensor.

I am assuming if I cut them and then twist them together, it will bypass the sensor??

ANother pic shows how they run towards the front of the machine - the rest of the wires all seem to head down at the back so thats why I'm guessing these 2 run to the lid sensor which I am assuming is at the front of the machine?

I think this is the service manual for my machine

Is part 17 and 18 the lid sensor?

17 is the lid sensor, 18 is just a cover. While you've got the top deck off check the Out-of-balance switch as well.

OK well thanks for your advice - I cut the blue and black wires near where they connect to the control board, pared them back a little then twisted them together and covered with electrical tape.

Machine now working perfectly!

To be perfectly honest not sure I will replace the switch. Thinking of upgrading the machine to one of the new 8 litre F&P models with the very low agitator - not sure I want to buy a part for the old GW603 if I am getting rid of it in the next few weeks.
