AEG Competence D8100-1M keeps turning off

Postby mje » Tue Mar 23, 2010 2:15 pm

I have a
AEG Competence
Product No. 944171162
Model No. D8100-M

It appears to have an intermittent fault where the oven turns off in the first few minutes. When this happens it continues to happen but sometimes persisting in turning it back on again eventually works. I have seen other threads on this forum for other models of AEG Competence and they generally point to oven safety cutout or oven fan thermostats. Years ago when this first started happening a repair man replaced a part that looks like

THIS

and charged £120 but it does not seem to have helped. My wife is sick of this problem and insists we repair it or buy a new oven - the expense of either I'd like to avoid. I'm perfectly capable of replacing the part(s) but
wondered if anyone had any advice as whether this problem is more likely to be the safety cutout or the oven fan thermostat.

Thanks

Mine has been doing this for a while. I read the forum posts and changed the part you mention - no fix.

I have today found a forum post on this link http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=257620 that says the main power switch is the problem.

I have just tested it, switched the oven on to fan oven, let all the fans rev up, and wiggled the power button, and the oven switched off exactly the same as if the fault had occurred.

I have just emailed the webmaster to see if they can supply a new switch, if not, I will have to repair the unit.

Thanks. I saw that post and I tried it but I cannot make mine turn off consistently by wiggling the power switch. Sometimes it turns off and sometimes it does not so I think all that is happening in my case is it is turning off for some other reason whilst I am wiggling the switch.

I read somewhere the switch is not that easy to replace as the facia is glued on so bets of luck.

Hi.

Power switch is a known issue on these causing random cutting out of either oven. The switch is only available with the complete control panel & that I believe is well over a ton the last time I checked.

Would it be possible to bypass the power switch ? Cant imagine it would use up much extra power being on 24 / 7 with just a couple of extra LEDs on the display?

Hi.

I obviously cannot advise you to do this as doing so alters the manufacturers spec's & may compromise your safety.

For me, it's switch replacement or nothing.

Sorry.

Well after attacking the switch with some Maplin Contact Cleaner spray, all seems to be well!

A client of mine also has an AEG Competence. She has complained that the oven turns itself off after around 40 mins. Also, when you turn on the oven, the control panel and the two knobs very quickly become Red Hot, far too hot to touch. What do you think is causing these problems and what do you suggest she does?

Hi.

Are you sure the cooling fan is running?
