Hotpoint Aquarius SDW60 Dishwasher "Heat/Burning Smell"

Postby scoopd » Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:22 pm

We noticed an abnormal smell in coming from what appeared to be the top of the dishwasher. When we took the appliance out it seemed that one of the pipes had been lying against the black back of the dishwasher. The pipe had left an indentation on the black back as though it had melted against it.The pipe its self also had what appeared to a brownness against the corresponding area. There also appears to be a kind of "bubbling" all over that black back panel(not sure if that was always there or not).

Obviously we didn't realise that the dishwasher had been pushed so far in the this pipe would touch the back of the dishwasher. However it has been in the same place for a few years without issue.

1st time we ran the machine and noticed a smell it was on a normal wash and arose before the drying stage.

Basically just wondering what it could be and whether it's worth getting an engineer out or it could be too costly a job to be worth it.

We obviously have turned the machine off until repair.

Many Thanks

When you say one of the pipes, is it the fill hose or the grey corrugated drain hose?

The back of lots of dishwashers are exactly like this, its a layer of black bitumen soundproofing. It is black and bubbly and does get warm and stick to anything pressed against. It is not uncommon for the mains plug to actually stick to the back of the dishwasher if it is located there.

I would pull the machine forward five or six inches and run it on a normal wash cycle without and dishes or detergent in it first. Keep a close eye on it during this time and see what happens. If you still get a strong burning smell then switch it off and get it looked at.

Hi,It's the grey hose. From what you say the bitumen seems to not be the issue. It definately seems to be coming from the top of machine. Will try what you say.
Thanks

Is the smell an electrical type smell or a plastic type smell.. it could be coming from the base of the machine and rising up inside the side panels to the top.

It could be coming from the top of the door, lots of bits and pieces in there, if it is still making the smell then you should not use it again until it has been checked over.
