Ian came out today to look at f/f. Said it needs new evaporater cover and fan and will get back to me with a price. Does the fan come separately from the evap cover or together, just trying to estimate cost of repair to see if its worth fixing.

The fan and the evaporator cover come as a complete one piece item.

I've had all of these problems mentioned, and after basically learning from scratch what all of the parts were and did, found that the thermal fuse had failed. Now I've changed that, it worked fine for 6 weeks now its gone again. What is going on? i'm seriously considering moding the thermal fuse assembly and fitting a self resetting fuse in its place as this is a pain in the ar*e

Hi Paul

Did you refit the new thermal fuse in the correct position ?If this has failed in 6 weeks then its likely that you did not correctly fit it.

Well when I removed the old one, it was wrapped in a foam sleeve which was cable tied to the de-icing heater. I managed to compress the sleeve enough to remove it without cutting the tie. The replacement went back in the same place which is why I'm a little lost as to why it has failled. if I replace it with a self resetting thermal fuse ,(RS do one that works at 45 degc, does anyone know what temperature it should be?) , surely that will work OK.

confused!!! :?

My moded thermal fuse has been in for just over 2 weeks now, everything working fine so far. If anyone wants to try the same, I got the fuse from RS, part No.176-9081. it costs about £2.50 ,rated at 9amp and it resets on fall in temperature. In essence it works just like a thermostat so if it sees a temperature in excess of 45 degc, it will switch off and then back on again once it has dropped to 35 or so. Just remove the old unit from the fridge, cut off the foam and the see through plastic capsule. Open up the two crimps olding the old unit in place. Crimp on the new unit and cover/reseal with heat shrink tube- reseal the ends with silicone. Job done, why on earth Samsung didn't do that in the first place -other than to make money out of spares !!

Hi

The reason that its not done by manufacturers not just samsung is that WATER & ELECTRIC DOES NOT MIX. Unless the components are made and sealed correctly which I am sorry to tell you this does not and is not safe.
If the appliance develops a electrical fault and catches fire then you can be held on manslaughter charges and your house insurance will be void.

This is blunt but the safety devices are there for a reason and if placed incorrectly which i beleive you placed the new one incorrectly it would lead to premeture failure which is not a component failure.

agreed, 100%

basically what uve done paul is the equivalent of bypassing the thermal fuse

u never took the time to wonder WHY the THERMAL fuse had gone? and what its purpose was/is?

honestly, manufacturers spend millions per year in the development of these components. you should email them and save them a fortune

just another self modification post, and it should be noted that any engineer, on this site or anywhere do not recommend this, its both reckless and silly, the fuse is there for a reason .. please , think of this.. yes, your 'modification' works like a stat, the original fuse cuts out when a fault occurs, what if your fuse sticks in the on position, and a fault occurs?

yup the problem becomes inflamed, and COULD become a safety hazzard

incidentally, we got a memo from samsung, quoting that any modification, by ANYBODY, and that included the use of non samsung spares, would invalidate ANY guarantee, manufacturers or extended, and would definitely exhonerate samsung from ANY liability in any way shape form or manner

my question to you (and others, who thought it clever to attatch pc fans with duct tape and leave trailing wires) is.. is it really worth it for a few quid more?

i know the answer.. do you?

Guys,

Perhaps we should publish some pictures of fridge fires on frost free to show people the danger that they place themselves and their families in by doing this sort of thing. Maybe that would get the message across.

Thermal safety devices are there for a reason, manufacturers don't fit them just because they feel like it or think it might be a good idea.

On frost free the placement and values are absolutely VITAL to ensure that it all works. This includes the overall internal temperature of the unit in operation, too hot or too cold and it can spoil food or make it not fit for consumption. And, let's face it, the reason that you bought a fridge was to keep food in, safely, that you're going to eat.

That's why we don't bodge them like this and why we're so negative on these types of fix.

Everything working fine... yeah till the first time it goes into an extended defrost and up in flames or someone gets sick from bad food.
