Refrigerator Sparks Fire In Mobile Home

Published: Jun 23, 2007 - Page: 2B

A trailer at Cedarcrest Southmoor Mobile Home Village, 10615 Airline Highway, caught fire Friday evening, St. George Fire Department spokesman Eldon Ledoux said.

A malfunctioning refrigerator caused the blaze, Ledoux said.

“The fire originated there and burned through the outer wall of the trailer,” he said.

The trailer’s resident was out to dinner when the fire started and had taken his pet dog with him, Ledoux said. No one was injured in the blaze.

Ledoux estimated the home had sustained $10,000 of fire and smoke damage.

The first fire truck arrived on the scene seven minutes after receiving a call, Ledoux said.

The fire was under control by 8:06 p.m.

St. George and Baton Rouge fire departments both responded to the call.

It's almost a daily thing, but if you think it's safe and you want to take the risk you feel free.

An auto-resetting thermal trip is NOT a thermal fuse. A one-shot is just that- it blows in the fault condition.

But putting a thermostat in instead and you're then continuing to cycle power to an already faulty device, with unknown and possibly disastrous consequences...

I've just joined, because I'm one of those that has the same Samsung problem. Firstly , I'd like to say thanks for the advice, although I cannot fix the problem here & now at least I know what is wrong and that removes some of the frustration
Secondly , to those that think the engineers on here are talking garbage, I work for a large multinational in the Engineering department, one of our constant directives is cost cutting, we're told to take out anything that isn't necessary. So when a huge multinational deems that for health and safety concerns that this fuse is essential, you think you know better than the literally dozens of engineering minds that went into the development of this product? I think that sort of arrogance will get you or someone else killed!
Sorry to sound so harsh on a first post but I've seen first hand what the consequences of a 'that'll do the job' attitude results in. Whether you believe that Samsung has taken the attitude 'our product failed but at least nobody got hurt' or 'our product failed but at least we avoided a big fat lawsuit' is irrelevant. The thermal fuse is there for one reason : no-one gets injured or killed. How sure can you be that substituting the fuse with a resetting trip is safe? Even the massive loss of property is a harsh lesson
Thanks again for the info, one more thing though  UK law makes provisions for 'expected longevity' of expensive items so don't take those warranties as black & white. I've already fought and won with A***s over a Lexmark printer. Be prepared for a lot of stonewalling but the retailer has a lot more legal obligations to the consumer than they would care to admit 8)
