Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down - help!

Postby Sam L » Mon Jul 18, 2005 8:51 pm

Purchased in Jan 2003. Been working fine until now when freezer display has begun flashing and freezer is now cold but not freezing. Fridge is now warm! Very frustrated as call out for an engineer is £72.50.

Any ideas as to what is wrong? Have tried switching on and off (it was the best I could think!) but to no avail.

If anyone has ideas I would be very grateful! Can't believe I purchased such a complicated fridge freezer!

Thanks in advance :?

It could be any number of things I'm afraid Sam.

If you could post the model number it would help us advise you a little better as Whirlpool have many versions of their US fridges.

Check inside the fridge for the rating plate, it'll be on there ;)

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. Model number:

858615115010 Serial Number: 110310006991

We turned the fridge freezer off last night with the doors open and switched it back on at 8am today. The fride is now cooling down but obviously the freezer is still flashing as it has not reached the correct temperature. Am hoping that it will get to the right temp as the fridge does feel very cool already.

In the meantime the Whirlpool man turned up this morning and reckons we need a new control board at £200.75!! We are waiting to see if the freezer can cool down to normal again before getting this fixed....could get a new fridge for that!!

Even if the fridge freezer starts working again now, I am assuming it will go wrong again at some point. I can't believe how quickly it has broken down! Any advice? Thanks!

Hi sam,

when you switched the appliance off, did you have a large puddle of water on the floor - could be a problem with the auto defrost.

What area are you in (postcode)?

Hiya,
If the Whirlpool engineer diagnosed correctly I think you'll find it more expensive. If memory serves me correctly there was a change to the main boards in 2003 (after your model) and it would entail changing both the main board and the front panel.

Hello again!

There was not a puddle on the floor after switching off. By 11am yesterday the freezer had reached -18 as normal and is now working normally again. Hence, the fridge is back to its normal self.

I am obviously very happy about this! However, am also a bit worried that it will happen again and will cost lots of money to fix.

One thing that is strange that I forgot to mention is that when you fill a glass with the filtered water it is not a constant stream, and comes out in spurts. However, if you open the fridge door when using the filtered water then it comes out normally.

Am very confused by this fridge freezer!

Thank you for your help!

When you're dispensing water do you hear a clicking noise?
If so, one of the relays on the main board is chattering, the cure is a replacement board. (In the case of your machine, both boards).

Yup,

DP has it spot on - spluttering water dispenser that stops when the fridge door opens is a rear board, but, you will need front as well due to the age

rear board is £99.23, front £119.21 (no price on system, but have price for a different colour) plus VAT of course

sorry!

I am having a similar problem with my water dispenser. It dispenses water in spurts too, also when the ice maker is using water you can hear the same clicking, but when I open my door, the clicking is slower, also the light flases on and off. If I turn the ice maker off the water dispenses normally. If it is a relay, where is the circuit board located?and is it possible to just replace the relay

Thanks

I have the same problems with a S25BRSS31...

Surely as paolo says it must be possible to replace a faulty relay for a few quid instead of the whole board for £200???

what about an exchange on a reconditioned board?

Someone must know...

Cheers

Sorry, don't know anyone does that recon boards for these.
I did however try changing relays on a couple of boards but found the problem lay deeper in the electronics. Didn't have enough time to dig any deeper so shelved that project. (Might get around to it again one day as there might be a market for these.)
The only cure I know of is to change the rear board (and the front if your machine is an older one).

Its not the relays causing the problem.Granted they are chattering.

OK thanks...

Where is the best place to get a replacement board from? - I presume it is a simple enough job to replace the part myself if I get one?

Cheers...

Hello all,

I'd really appreciate any help along the same lines:

My S20BRWW20 has started clicking for about 20-30 secs at a time, but seems to do it more in the evening for some reason. The clicking stops when either of the doors are opened, but resumes when they are closed. The water and ice dispensers both seem to work, although occasionally the water pulses and produces the same clicking sound.

I'm also thinking of replacing boards myself but does anyone know where to get them and how can I find out if I need both boards, as I bought it in June 2003?

I stupidly didn't register it, nor did I take out the 8 year parts warranty. D'oh!

Thanks for any replies,

Wadey

On the rating label are two 12 digit numbers. Post them here and we'll be able to tell you if you need one or both boards.
