Zanussi Fridge Freezer ZEBF 255 - fridge & freezer broke

Postby BeccaC » Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:30 am

Hi! Please help. Just moved our Zanussi fridge freezer (slim line, fridge on top, ZEBF 255) about 7 metres out of our kitchen and into our dining room and it is no longer working. It has only been moved temporarily while work is being done in the kitchen. We plugged it straight in and left it on normal setting (3) but both fridge and freezer are now warm. The light still comes on in the fridge. The bit at the bottom at the back (compressor?) is still making a faint humming/buzzing noise but the big metal grid thing (filament?) is cold. Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? The fridge freezer is only about 18 months old so all help gratefully received.
If this is a job for an engineer, would it be best to wait until the fridge is back in position or is the problem unlikley to be related to the move?
Thank you.

Sounds like a system fault. i.e: lack of refrigerant, blocked system, inefficient compressor. If so, potentially a major fault.

If it was ok before the move, it could be that some damage may have occured to the pipework which allowed the refrigerant to escape. Was it transported in an upright position? Did you leave it to stand before switching it back on?
Please note: Before following any advice I give above, always isolate appliance from mains electric supply before attempting any repairs. NO LIVE TESTING!

Thanks for your help thespindoctor. We used a sack trolley at the front (not over the workings) so it was nearly upright. Not aware of doing any damage. We didn't leave it to stand though.

Hi

If the appliance was leaned back as soon as you switched it off then the pressure that was in the system could have moved oil from the comopressor and blocked the system.

When moving refrigeration it is advisable to switch off for approx 60 mins befor moving then leave standing for another 60 mins if the appliance has not been leant back.

if you move a refrigeration appliance the best side to move it is to lean it to the side of the compessor that has the charging stub which is the peice of pipe which doesnt go anywhere and is ussually blanked off.

Thanks Bryan. Is the conclusion that it is dead?!? Are there any tricks we can try to bring it back to life or do you think we may as well give up on it?

Hi

There is the possibility that by having a system engineer looking at it it may be cured by having a vac out and regas.at 18 months old then yes i would git it a go.if you purchased it from john lewis group then it'll have a 2 yr warranty.

but there again i would try my luck with the manufacturers as a compressor shouldnt fail after 18 months..just dont mention moving it.
