Hi,

I have a BJ414 and am trying to control it with an external thermostat for brewing beer in.

Problem is, the BJ414 seems to have some kind of timer that keeps coming on and essentially stopping the fridge from working. There is a faint ticking noise from the lower back left hand corner, and peeking around the back I see a little white knob that I can turn to re-activate the fridge each time.. total pain.

Can anybody please tell me what this is for, and how to use it correctly. Ideally I'd like to deactivate the timer fully so my external thermostat has total control. It has a compressor delay function, so no need to worry about damaging the fridge.

Can I just adjust it to always off, or do I need to flip the fridge over and unwire that module out of the circuit?

I expect you are referring to the defrost timer if it is a frost free freezer. Removes power from compressor, switches on heater in evaporator, melts ice, drains away. other wise huge ice block will form jamming fan.

The problem is that I am running this at a higher temperature, either 12 or 18 degrees depending on the style on beer I'm brewing. As such, the defrost function may never be needed anyway.

I have a 9 minute delay on my external thermostat, so if this 9 minutes off time happens to coincide with the defrost timer kicking in the frdge can be off for a long time.

Since the air temperature outside was about 42 degrees C today and the fridge is in my garage, it doesn't take long for the temp inside the fridge to easily rise 5 degrees or more.

Am I able to safely reduce the delay on the external thermostat down to something like 3 mins without any concern of damaging the compressor? And also how long do the timer-based defrosts usually run for on average?
