Vacuum Cleaner Help Forum

Hi, sorry to trouble you all but I'm a bit confused and my vacuum knowledge is obviously sadly lacking!

I'm after a new cleaner and thought I'd check out this forum as it is the best out there.

Now I was under the impression that the bagless revolution had occurred and Dyson was king but on reading other posts here it appears not!

So my question is Bagged or Bagless? (Taking into consideration future cost - bag replacement, filter changes etc etc.)

Cylinder or upright?

Then after sorting that money being no object what should I buy?

My shortlist includes a Dyson DC25, a Sebo X4, a Bosch BSG8PRO1 and a Miele S7580.

Sorry I know there's stuff on this already but some of it seems to conflict with other opinions.

Hi Alan,

You forgot Sebo which, as anyone that knows anything about cleaners will tell you, they are one of the best you can buy.

If you want a cylinder cleaner (which to my mind are superior) then Sebo K3 Premium is a superb machine which gives you the best of both worlds as it has the pukka power head on it.

I've not yet used the new upright Sebo cleaners but some friends that sell them are more than a little impressed by them. They have a lot of clever stuff built in and are, according to all reports thus far, outstanding to use. TBH though, it's what I expect from Sebo as they don't seem to compromise much.

Bagged v bagless is a raging debate, still after almost 20 years since the first Dyson ever appeared and the Great British Public seemingly became fascinated with watching all their dirt swirling about in a plastic tub.

20 years later and... nope... I still cant see a commercial cleaner or one of what are considered to be the best domestic cleaners using a bagless system. Even if I knew nothing I'd wonder why but, the reason is simply that they are inferior in terms of performance.

People love the idea that they don't have to buy bags, but the problem just changes, it doesn't go away. With bagless you either have to buy and replace filters (a lot) or clean them (a lot) to keep the thing going, you also have to tip them out more often as well. Most people don't and the performance tails off, dramatically.

But people buy into the hype. Some even will tell you how brilliant their Dyson or whatever is but, as soon as they use a good cleaner again they'll never go back to a bagless one.

I'm sure you get the drift by now.

As to the cost of bags, I have a reasonably normal sized home with two young kids and we go though a pack and maybe a bit of bags a year. It's really not that expensive but a lot less messy than mucking about tipping dust out a bucket and the house is cleaner.

Buy the Miele or a Sebo. If it was my money, I'd go with the Sebo over all others every time.

I'm with Ken on this one............

Sebo everytime, they clean better than Kirby and are alot cheaper, I'm a carpet cleaner and they are the only vacuum cleaners I recommend, got commercial Sebos myself.

We only go through abot 15 bags per year in our house, possibly less.

The K3 that Ken has is nothing short of excellent, and the power head gives it upright performance on carpet in removing hair and grit.

Can't decide on the one you mentioned, the K3 Premium or the X4 as the cylinder has smaller bags. However I'm sure they're much the same.

sebo x4 has bigger bags as you said, but if you do a lot of stair cleaning hteonly flaw of the x4 (over the k3) is the fact the wandhose comes out of the top of the vac not the side/bottom like it would with a cylinder/dyson!

I know what you mean. They give you a full flight stair extension hose now with the X4, this reduces the machine falling over. The short wandhose is good for cleaning edges etc, where you would have one hand on the cleaner. For other jobs the extension hose takes the strain. You don't get it with the commercial models so I bought a couple.

Having said that if you pull a Dyson too hard (especially the light ones) they fall over too, no vacuum is infalliable!

Hi Guys, I shall be buying a Sebo X4 I think, once the finances settle down!

The reasons being that it has slightly larger bags and the long hose should prevent it falling over! Plus the hose problem is no different from the struggle I have with my current vacuum!

Certainly a good choice to go with a bagged unit. We bought a bagless and I had to empty it into the outside bin, getting covered in the resultant dust plume! Each time I emptied, the inner part had to be removed and stripped of fluff and hair.... not nice, more dust.

You don't get that problem with a Dyson. you just tip the cr#P in the bin and off you go. All other bagles cleaners are totally rubbish and clog in no time.

Thats exactly what a Dyson doesn't do. If you were a bird it would be good, they like to have a dust bath! You should love'em then Chris!

Well I have never had a dust bat from emptying any dyson.
