Can fail with age/use can also be damaged by stopping the dryer mid cycle to check on the clothes, you should turn to cool for a few minutes or just let it do its own thing.
Not a good idea to live test, no need to do it and highly dangerous, a simple test with multimeter or meggar would have revealed an open circuit stat.
