I have a DC04 which seems to be cutting out every time the power lead is moved around too much. I suspect either a break in the cable where it enters the body of the Dyson, or a loose contact where it connects to the switch.

To confirm this I need to remove the plastic housing surrounding the switch and cable entry point, but can't figure out how to do it. It looks like it just clips off (no sign of any screws), but I need some reassurance that I'm not going to snap anything!

Does anyone have any advice how I go about getting the thing off?

You need a small flat screwdriver bent over at end, which slides down the side of button which u will be then able to unclip. then just shorten the wire abit and refit

I think what Tony meant to say, was...

Unplug the vacuum before you start any work! The flex, of course, runs straight to the mains electricity; so if it's plugged in, you will die!

It does sound like a break in the flex. Access to the flex is under the on/off switch.

This seems to be a common fault on dco4's i've done mine, my inlaws and my neighbours, it's a bit of a pain because the connections are crimped spade terminals, halfords sell a comparable one since you can't reuse them. when you break the knob dyson will send you a new one, i think i got one free by first class next day post, even if you have to buy they aren't runious (unlike the hoses which will go next).

Indeed, but just about the only thing that will go wrong with a DC04.

They are easily the best vac Dyson ever made (and still do make).

But, if people treated their DC04's with more TLC, the flex's and hoses, would never break.

2x small spade plugs
and a crimping tool

Thanks for the info. Just done a DC04 following these instructions, only thing I'd add is the screw holding the switch and cable strain assembly is a star type head so you may need screwdriver/bit to fit. This Dyson is from our scout hut so gets lots of hammer but seems to just go on and on. Would agree with the comments about Dyson hoses being naff & expensive, I've DC05 at home which has needed several, thought someone would have brought out a more robust replacement?

I won't have ANY of you bringin Dyson down !!!!!!!!! I DO wish to correct an earlier statement which seems to have tickled 1 or 2 of you cynics out there... The DC04 is NOT the best model... It is the least WORST !!!! Mr D has very kindly COMPLETELY ignored rectifying ANY of his cleverly designed built-in faults, and fortunately, for ALL us repairpersons, most of them are built-in to rear their ugly splits and breaks at 25 months !!! APPROXIMATELY the same time span as an (white) elephants gestation period !! I've sussed it see !!! THANKYOU JAMES FOR PROVIDING HALF MY TOTAL INCOME FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS.... Point made me thinks............
