Washing machine not working making sparking sounds

Postby thanks11 » Wed Aug 02, 2006 11:06 am

My washing machine's stopped working after a leak in the pipe behind it (the one that feeds the cold water) it's making some sort of a clicking (sparking) sound when we try to switch it on. doesn't trip any rcd's or any other sort of problem- just doesn't switch on. - the sound is like it is continually sparking

I've now looked underneath the machine the the place where the mains leads go to (think it's called a module - looks like a PCB really) is sparking

any thing i can do??? anyone heard of this/similiar problem before?

is it cheaper to just get this replace (around £300) in the shops than to try and get someone to look at it?

the model is WIDL126S if it helps...

all comments appreciated.

Sparks usually fly from the motor and not the module. Therefore in a worst case scenario the cost of replacing the motor including labour and VAT will be around £150 (ish?)

Thanks for the quick response. I actually tilted the machine and switched the power on so that I could see what was happening since we could only 'hear' the sparks till then (or assume it was sparks that were making the sparking sound :) )

What we saw was: it was sparking at the place where the mains lead goes into the machine. i.e.: mains wires are plugged into the plug on one end and the other end goes into the machine - the place where it terminates is (or looks like) a PCB. I trawled through a few spares sites today and gathered that it was a 'module'.

the sparking sounds happen as soon as we switch the power supply on. the motor doesn't come into play until a program is selected and run. am i correct?

Good heavens! Then may I suggest you unplug the machine immediately and get an expert in to check it out as that is potentially very dangerous(see link below for help) 8O
