Hotpoint TDL52 grinding noise

Postby banzai » Fri Mar 16, 2012 2:07 pm

Hello
I recently replaced both the best and the rear bearing in our old but worthy TDL52.

It seemed to be perfectly happy for a couple of days but now is making a large grinding noise when the drum is turning. If I turn the drum by hand, it seems to come from the front bearing(?) where the drum connects with the door opening.

I checked the UKWhitegoods store but this part doesn't seem to exist - the only part for the front of the drum is a drum felt, but I don't recall seeing this on the machine at any time.

Is this repairable or has it now gone beyond economic repair?

Thanks

Usually on this heap of tin the elasticated belt puts a great deal of stress on the 'front duct' (Pt No. C00207103) and the 3 silly little plastic 'drum bearers' (Pt No C00095534). The bearers wear away and then there's nothing left but the bare metal support of the front duct left. Hence the rhythmical sound of metal on metal that once it's left until it gets to ear piercing level means major surgery is required.

HTH? :D

Martin

Thanks :)

I take it the thing is safe to use so long as we can stand the noise?
The cost of those parts (about £50 for both as far as I can see) is heading towards "cheaper to buy a new one" territory, I think, but if I can keep using it for a while, it would help...

Safe?.....tough question, hard to define from my remote location.....but, hopefully though before it catches fire or chunks of burning metal scorch the kitchen floor, likely as not the 13amp fuse will blow or the RCD on the fuse board will save the day? Perhaps before any of that happens the smoke detector will start screaming?.....hard to define what could happen to be honest. :rolls:
