Well I have never had a dust bat from emptying any dyson.

I have always got covered in the past even when wrapping a plastic bag around the container (as they advise) to empty it. So called bagless.

I just empty it into the wheely bin. the newer Dysons with the push button opening are even better. Other bagless machines can be extremely messy especially the filters.

That is a change for the better as not so much muck should escape. Yes the other bagless vacuums are disgusting to empty, the filters make one hell of a mess when cleaned as alot of them are supposed to be brushed etc.

I'm sticking with my bagged Sebo's though!

I also think a bagless is better for the environment, as there are no bags. And as some bags have plastic bits on them they will still be around in 1000 years.

Depends on a few things that does.

Like, what's the power offset of bagged against bagless for a start?

How much more often do you have to vacuum using bagless to get the same result?

What is the replacement cycle on filters?

What is the effect on lifespan?

What's the environmental cost of building in the Far East and Shipping to Europe as opposed to building in the EU?

So many questions that people don't want to answer when you start down that environmental road. But, more often than not, they've not been considered beyond some press release saying how "green" it is.

All that said, I'd expect the result to be a negligible overall difference, perhaps slightly tipped in favour of the bagged locally produced cleaner over the cheapo bagless cleaner made in Taiwan that are less efficient, used more often and don't last as long.

As an aside, from a purely scientific point of view, the materials used in the construction of plastic will be around in how ever many years you want to quote regardless of format. It's only how you want to spin the format that alters, not the fact that they will exist.

I'm with Ken, I am NO fan of bagless vacuum cleaners.

A friend of mine works at a chemical/machine supplier in Bradford and has done for many years he has never seen a bagless commercial vacuum except the Dyson Constantmax pile of shyte. In which case they begrudgingly supplied two to a school and they both blew up with in 6 months, commercial then? They looked like domestic ones with a commercial sticker on to me. Dyson seem to get very dirty motors very quickly, I believe and so does my friend that this is due to the abscense (sp) of a bag.

Dysons keep me busy anyroad as they remove so little muck from carpetting they get dirty very quickly and people pay me to clean it up for them, so in that respect I hope people keep on buying them!

My Mum has had Dysons for years so I bought here two commercial Sebos and the dirt that they removed after only being cleaned with Dysons for 7 years was unbelievable. The bags weighed an absolute ton. Her carpets have gone from looking quite dirty to nearly new! I wonder what sort of vacuum Mr Dyson has.........

Well our 7 nearly 8 year old DC04 is still giving perfect performance and removing dirt every other cleaner I have seen leaves behind. in all that time I have not had to buy bags or filters so that must have saved quite a lot of natural resources. It was also made in the UK. I know SEBO are good but you do need a new bag every time its full and there bags are 1/ quite pricey and 2/ have plastic caps. So even if our new Dyson that was built halfway round the world lasts as long as our old one it will still have less of an impact.

Without all the facts how can you say that? To my mind Madrat, it's not possible to arrive at that conclusion other than swallowing all the marketing spin that's pumped out. When you look at the actual facts there's no way to arrive at that conclusion.

Asides from which, I think you'll find that a lot of the bags are now made to be bio-degradable.

But TBH I don't really care about that. I'd far rather do the job right on the first pass and save the electricity required to do it again and, again. I'd much rather spend my own hard earned on a machine that was built to last. And, I'd much prefer the connivence of it too.

After being down this road of the environment since long before it became a public concern, going on 20 years, I reckon I have sussed the difference between some jumped up marketer telling me something is green and something that really is eco-friendly and, in the case of bagged cleaners versus baggless, the argument just doesn't stand up to scrutiny for several reasons already outlined in my previous post.

I agree that it's a nice idea in principle, but it doesn't work in practice as so many do not. You get nothing for nothing, it's a basic physical law that is very hard to escape from.

But to end it, I will once again reiterate one simple question, why do you think that none of the "premium" vacuum manufacturers and not one commercial cleaner manufacturer uses a baglesss cleaner?

Well a cleaner that is still going after nearly 8 years has had a good life, as for getting the job done, it dose first time. I agree all other bagles cleaners are total crap. Yes most bags are now bio degradable, but plastic isn't and as I said a lot of bags come with plastic bits on them.

I'm not a tree hugger by the way.

Considering alot of Hoover Juniors and Seniors are still working now from 30 odd years ago is 8 years really that good?

I still have a working Electrolux Z502 in the loft bought in 1978! Now thats a service life. Also never had any new parts except bags, filters and brush roller.

Dysons only remove surface dirt, they cannot and do not remove embedded grit properly, if you don't believe me buy a Sebo, vac your carpets as throughly as you want with the Dyson, do them again passing each area only once with the Sebo, then cut the bag open and see the c*** the Dyson wasn't removing!

I wont be getting a sebo, because it uses bags and filters that have to be replaced regularly. And until someone brings out a bagles thats as good as a Dyson I will be sticking with them. As I said our 8 year old Dyson is still going strong so who knows it could still be around in another 20 years.

I don't really like bagless, but I can confirm out of all of them Dyson are the best. Still no match to bagged though.

Besides you are Happy with Dyson, me with Sebo, after all if it does what we want, then were both happy all round

Would not touch a Dyson with a barge pole myself. Nothing worse than asking the customer if I can borrow their vac cleaner to service the tumble dryer and they wheel out a Dyson
