evening all.
i have a problem with our tumbler. been doing a few searches on this excellent site, and have a few ideas, but would like this confirming as i'm not an expert.
machine is about 18 months old. a couple of weeks ago it became very noisy. i checked it and found both fans, the one at the back, and the one in the tunnel had become loose on the splined shafts, so i replaced them. all good - for a while.
then, the other day, the wife said it stopped and wouldn't restart. then it did. it did this the next day to me. i swore at it, emptied the water tank, swore some more, and it started. yesterday when she started it up, we noticed it wasn't heating. i noticed too that the power cable had stuck to the back cover - something's been getting a bit hot!
i checked the 2 little doo-dah's by the elements. one has clear continuity, the other is dished and has an open circuit. before i order these - am i on the right track?
i am not an electrician, but i am an engineer with a bit of 'leccy knowledge.

It sounds as though the motor capacitor may have failed. This would lead to overheating and failure of the one shot thermal cut out.

Two different capacitors used on these machines, check before you change to see if it has a 7 or an 8 mf capacitor.

The thermostat kit is a 1703200. THIS is what you need.

You need the start relay board - p/no 1702980 and a thermostat kit - p/no 1703200.

Relay board is what you activate when you push the start button. The relay gets tired by the excessive vibration and drops out. Motor stops, sudden rise in temperature will trip the safety thermostat.

An email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk quoting those part numbers will get things moving for you speedily.

Power off when working on the machine, please.

its one of three problems

1> the cycling stat is faulty ( the one with continuity) allowing the dryer to overheat, thus tripping the safety cut out

2> the condensers blocked, thats the filter type thing, behind the flap at the bottom, secured with 3 grey clips - it reduces airflow, thus allowing the temperature to rise to an unaccepatble level

or, and this is the most likely

3> the motor capacitor has failed.. this would explain it.. if the motor doesnt go, the fans dont run either, therefore the heater is on with no airflow.. the stat will trip

i say this, because it didnt start on the odd occassion.. did it hum and not start ?

for the price, id change the capacitor anyway, its mounted on the base, next to the motor

trust me, they fail a lot

True, relay very common failure on these but for the small cost of a capacitor it may be wise to change that as well.

and incidentally, an 8uf capacitor is supplied with all new dryers, its ok to use that

its usually the capacitor
or the timer

still, im sure they go, i must fix 2 of these things a day

I don't wish to get into an argument with you of all people but the post times suggest different, unless you are a very slow typist.

Sorry for the delay in joining back in....... Just checked my records - I've fitted two capacitors this year, four start boards and innumerable stat kits. Our OP should check for the "hum" after the button is pressed - pretty definitive.

morning guys, and thanks for answering so swiftly.
maybe i wasn't too clear in my OP. the 2 times it wouldn't go, the main motor didn't hum or anything, nothing happened. the little motor down by the condenser ran, that was the hum. i checked the drum wasn't overloaded or had a belt problem but all was ok. it starts on the button right now, and has only done the not start thing once. i think she said it stopped mid cycle once too. looking like the timer then?
it runs just as it always did, even doing the reverse rotation bit ok - just with no heat.
i'm possibly getting out of my depth here, and may have to call out a local guy who fixes washers/dryers...

yup, timers best bet if the pump was running and the motor wasnt

mmmm.....because the timer is quite dear, what i have decided to do is just buy a capacitor [and the 'stat kit of course]. i'll fit the capacitor first but omit the 'stats. then test run it for a day/evening and see if it still stops. it can do that without risk of blowing the new stats, then, if all is well, i will fit the stats and get the heat back on. if it still does it, then i'll have to get a timer and/or the relay.
logical diagnostic process?

i did as i said - fitted the capacitor and ran it several times for 40 mins to 1 hour at a time, and it didn't stop once. so i fitted the stat kit and it has been in pretty constant use since to clear up the backlog of damp washing, and it's been fine.

so, big thanks to all who replied - you have saved me quite a few quid, and thanks to the guys in the parts dept for getting me the parts here extra quick.

next thing will be the brushes in the washing machine - they only seem to last a year or so, and they will be due soon, i have read the section here about it already.
