Smeg 5 LED Dishwasher Fault Codes

Fault or error codes used in dishwashers produced by Smeg for a wide range of brands including Hotpoint, Diplomat, Hygena, Teka and others. These dishwasher were almost always integrated models with a cupboard door on the front of them and the LEDs on the top edge of the dishwasher door although the same codes may apply to other dishwasher models.

These dishwasher fault codes will displayed as a digital code, exactly as you will see below, in an LED or LCD panel or display on the dishwasher door.

Before you start any investigation of the fault or even remove the lid of the dishwasher please read and fully understand this article in full and pay particular attention to the safety and information notices at the bottom of this page as they contain extremely important information!

Please remember to support our site by buying spares from our spare part store here and, if you decide that you really need an engineer please support the local repairers that help make this site possible, you can search for a repairer from the link below.

The codes are, from the UK Whitegoods Fault Code Guide are as below.

Smeg Dishwasher Fault Codes

Like other fault codes these written for dishwasher repairers and not for the general public by Smeg and they assume a certain level of competence on the part of the user in diagnostic routines. We may have added some notes to try to assist you in determining the nature of the fault you have but, you will still need to investigate each failure on its own merits. For more help and advice on fault finding on a dishwasher please refer to our basic fault finding guide from this link before you begin.

Please check that any Smeg dishwasher spares recommended are suitable for use on your particular model and production code or serial number. If you are unsure about the suitability of any spare part please ask to ensure that you get the correct spares for your washing machine. Please, don't guess or assume as spares can be altered on a production run with the same model number having several different alternative components used.

More Help, Advice & Guidance

Should you need more help and guidance please use the links from this article as most of them will help you to understand your dishwasher a lot better and probably very much help you in diagnosing the fault you have. Of course there are many other articles on the site that will also help you do this.

In addition you can post in our help and advice forums after registering but please do pay heed to the information below before doing so and read the guides, they are there to help you. But if you are in any doubt at all or don't think you are up to diagnosing the fault yourself please click here to find a local washing machine engineer.

You must understand certain things before you begin or attempt any repairs on your own and we want to make these points very, very clear to anyone that decides to investigate one of these or any other washing machines:

  • We are not responsible for your safety, you are and by using this guide you accept that and accept that any damage that you may cause and work undertaken is entirely at your own risk.
  • We will advise the common causes of the fault codes but we cannot guarantee that any parts or work recommended will resolve the issue. It is entirely your responsibility to diagnose your particular problem and resolve it.
  • We are not responsible for you buying spares that do not resolve the problem, this is down to your own diagnosis not ours.
  • No warranty is inferred, implied or given.
You also have to understand that fault or error codes are not a "magic bullet", they will not tell you what the problem is, they will only offer you an indication of where the problem lies and they are no substitute for good old fashioned diagnostic skills. You can find out more about what fault codes actually tell you in this article. So please be well aware that, even with this new found knowledge you will still have to actually be capable of investigating and diagnosing the problem and this means adhering to basic appliance safety for working on them. As, if you don't and tell the engineers in the forums that you hooked up components to a live feed, worked on a live appliance and so on they will be a whole heap less willing to help you in our help and advice forums because they will assume that you are trying to commit suicide and are not safe working on your machine.

Please do note that manufacturers can and do change fault codes without notice and we cannot guarantee that these error codes will apply to your particular model as all codes apply to a wide range of appliances and not normally any one specific model. To determine if these fault codes do apply to your particular dishwasher model please post a request to confirm this in the forums.

Smeg Dishwasher Service Notes

From an older article:

Smeg dishwashers utilise the five programme LEDs to indicate faults. A combination of the first four lamps will flash and lamp five will be lit and steady. A basic interpretation of these codes will be found in the user manual.

There are four circumstances which can cause spurious lights on the control panel.

The various culprits which can cause this error

Smeg Dishwasher Mains Suppressor

These have a habit of blowing up, but still allowing power into the machine. As a consequence, they generate electrical noise which can cause corruption of the computer board. If you are lucky, replacing the suppressor will set the PCB to rights. There are two types of suppressor – one is a plastic cylinder on a metal frame in the back corner, the other is a plastic three lead cylinder in the front left of the wiring loom, under the tub.

Smeg Dishwasher Soap Dispenser

This device is operated by a solenoid on the inside of the door. Over time, the solenoid can deteriorate internally; it also suffers from dampness and dodgy wiring connectors. As above, replacing the dispenser may restore order.

Smeg Dishwasher Computer Board Or Programmer

They do go wrong, simple fact. Occasionally there is visible evidence of blown tracks and burnt connections, for instance. Often, they simply stop working.

Smeg Dishwasher Door Lock In Door Closed Position

Occasionally, the door switch can be faulty or the door lock itself jammed in the door closed position (although the door is in fact open). This may cause spurious flashing lights and cause the programme buttons to become inoperative.

The conclusion to be drawn from the above is that there is no simple, sure-fire way of diagnosing problems on these machines. They are technically complex and replacement parts are expensive. Many repairers will carry the suppressors and dispensers as stock items, allowing testing by substitution. This is not a practical option for the home repairer guessing is an expensive way of repairing an appliance.

If you wish to carry on with the diagnosis, remember, power off for anything other than observation.

i assumed the suppressor was for smoothing electrical noise. will the machine run without it

Thanks kenneth

replace suppressor but supplier did not have original supplied one with live neutral and two pe connections connected incoming mains to live and neutral and the two pe terminals to machine.
Machine switches on and I can change proggrams but nothing works. circulation pump, empty pump and all switches test ok.
If i hold the p button and switch on the 2 right hand lights flash. I do not work on white goods i repair engineering machines just trying to help a neighbour
