AEG Fault Codes

The AEG washing machines and washer dryers that these error codes relate to those that use what they call the "EWM2000evo" and AEG Nexxxt display boards and it's these fault codes that we will cover in this article. These are some of the most common fault codes for AEG washing machine models as well as other Electrolux Group produced brands such as AEG, Arthur Martin, Tricity Bendix, John Lewis and Electrolux obviously.

If these fault codes apply to your machine is should have a facia panel on it like one of those shown below, there are fifteen known variants covering quite literally hundreds of different models sold in the UK and across the EU.

The error code is displayed as a digital code, exactly as you will see below, you will get a blinking or flashing light on the front of the washing machine.

If it is the latter then you will see a pattern to the flashes if you look closely it will be a series of rapid flashes followed by a pause and then the series of flashes will be repeated, this is the error code being displayed. If you count the number of flashes being given then you use that number to correspond to the fault code, for example, ten flashes would be fault code A, but we will explain how to read the fault code.

  Electronic Controller Replacement

Against a number of the fault codes for these machines you will see that we recommend that you get an appliance engineer to do it and that it isn't a DIY repair. The reason for this is that in oder to replace many of these electronic modules it is required that the board is programmed and this is beyond the scope of a DIY repair as well as most unskilled people not involved in appliance repairs.

It is also the case that reprogramming these boards can be model specific, due to the particular features used on that washing machine or washer dryer and that incorrect installation and programming will result in a dead board. Due to the high risk of people programming the replacement board incorrectly we will not offer instructions to the general public on how to carry this out, apart from which Electrolux might get a bit upset if we did.

Most of our approved repairers and all Service Force agents will be able to carry out these sorts of repairs for you at a reasonable cost.

If they make a mistake they have to pay for a replacement board, if you make a mistake then it would be you paying for it and it's not worth the risk.

Before you start any investigation of the fault or even remove the lid of your AEG washing machine or washer dryer please read and fully understand this article in full and pay particular attention to the safety and information notices at the bottom of this page as they contain extremely important information!

  AEG Washing Machine Fault Codes

These fault codes are written for washing machine repairers and not for the general public by Electrolux and UK Whitegoods and they assume a certain level of competence on the part of the user in diagnostic routines. We have added some notes to try to assist you in determining the nature of the fault you have but, you will still need to investigate each failure on its own merits. For more help and advice on fault finding on a washing machine please refer to our basic fault finding guide from this link before you begin.

Please check that any AEG washing machine spares recommended are suitable for use on your particular model and PNC number. If you are unsure about the suitability of any spare part please ask to ensure that you get the correct spares for your washing machine or washer dryer. Please, don't guess or assume as spares can be altered on a production run with the same model number having several different alternative components used.

The EWM2000 PCB is used on the AEG machines and there is very probably a huge crossover in the information between these two.

E11

  • Poor fill before wash cycle
  • Tap off or water pressure too low
  • Drain hose improperly positioned
  • Fill valve is defective
  • Leaks on pressure switch
  • Pressure switch failed
  • Wiring fault
  • Main board defective
  • Cycle is paused with door locked Start

This is usually your basic filling error so the usual should be checked, that the water supply is switched on and then onto the water fill valves.

E12

  • Difficulty in fill during drying (maximum time 3 min. fill in drying during the wash load phase)
  • Tap off or water pressure too low Valve failed
  • Pressure switch water circuit
  • Pressure switches
  • Wiring
  • Main PCB
  • Cycle is paused

 

E13

  • Water leaks Drain hose improperly positioned
  • Water pressure too low
  • Fill valve is defective
  • Water circuit on pressure switch is leaking or blocked
  • Pressure switch faulty
  • Cycle is paused with door locked

This is only applicable where a leak detection system is fitted.

E21

  • Poor draining
  • Drain hose kinked/clogged/improperly positioned
  • Drain filter clogged/dirty
  • Drain pump faulty
  • Pressure switch faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main board faulty
  • Current leak between heating element and ground
  • Cycle is paused Start

 

E22

  • Difficulty in fill during drying or drying condenser blocked (pressure switch closed on “FULL”)
  • Drain hose kinked
  • Filter blocked
  • Drying condenser blocked
  • Drain pump faulty
  • Pressure switches faulty
  • Wiring
  • Main circuit board faulty
  • Current leakage between heater and ground
  • Cycle is paused Start

 

E23

  • Defective triac for drain pump
  • Drain pump faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main board faulty
  • Emergency drain procedure - Cycle stops with door unlocked OFF/reset

This refers to the triac that controls the pump function on the main controller.

E24

  • Malfunction in sensing circuit on triac for drain pump
  • Main board faulty
  • Emergency drain procedure - Cycle stops with door unlocked OFF/reset

As above.

E31

  • Malfunction in pressure switch circuit (frequency of signal from pressure switch out of limits)
  • Pressure switch faulty
  • Wiring
  • Main PCB faulty
  • Cycle stops with door locked OFF/reset

 

E32

  • Electronic pressure switch improperly calibrated (level on electronic pressure switch differs from 0-66 mm after initial calibration drain and when anti-boiling pressure switch is on “empty”)
  • Tap is off or water pressure is too low
  • Fill valve faulty
  • Water circuit on pressure switches
  • Pressure switches
  • Wiring
  • PCB faulty
  • Cycle is paused Start

 

E33

  • Inconsistency between level on electronic pressure switch and level on anti-boiling pressure switch 1-2 (fault persists for at least 60 sec.)
  • Pressure switch defective
  • Current leak between heating element and ground
  • Heating element
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main board faulty
  • Water circuit
  • Emergency drain procedure - Cycle stops with door unlocked OFF/reset

 

E34

  • Inconsistency between level on electronic pressure switch and level on anti-boiling pressure switch 2 (fault persists for at least 60 sec.)

  • Electrical current leak between heating element and ground
  • Heating element faulty

  • OFF/reset

Water pressure system fault and we wouldn't consider this to be a DIY repair.

E36

  • Sensing circuit on anti-boiling pressure switch 1 defective
  • Main board faulty
  • Cycle stops with door locked OFF/reset

As above.

E37

  • Sensing circuit on anti-boiling pressure switch 2 defective
  • Main board faulty
  • Cycle stops with door locked OFF/reset

As Above

E38

  • Internal pressure takeoff is blocked (water level does not change for at least 30 sec of drum rotation)
  • Water circuit on pressure switches
  • Pressure switches
  • Motor belt broken
  • Heating phase is skipped

 

E39

  • Defective HV sensing on anti-overflow system
  • Main board faulty
  • Cycle stops with door locked OFF/reset

 

E3A

  • Faulty sensing by heating resistance relay
  • Main board defective.
  • Cycle stops with door locked OFF/reset

 

E41

  • Door unlocked
  • Door lock faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main board faulty
  • Cycle is paused Start

Usually a door lock that's faulty.

E42

  • Problem closing the door
  • Door lock faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main board faulty
  • Cycle is paused Start

E43

  • Defective triac supplying power to door delay system
  • Door lock unit faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main board faulty
  • Emergency drain procedure - Cycle stops OFF/reset

Pretty much the same as E40 and E41 fault codes.

E44

  • Defective sensing by door delay system
  • Main board faulty
  • Emergency drain procedure - Cycle stops OFF/reset

 

E45

  • Defective sensing by triac on door delay system
  • Main board faulty
  • Emergency drain procedure - Cycle stops OFF/reset

 

E51

  • Motor power supply triac short-circuited
  • PCB faulty
  • Current leakage from motor or from wiring loom
  • Cycle blocked, door locked (after 5 attempts) OFF/reset

Yet again, this refers to the triac on the electronic controller and not a DIY job.

E52

  • No signal from motor tachometric generator
  • Motor faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • PCB faulty
  • Cycle blocked, door locked (after 5 attempts) OFF/reset

Tacho coil on the motor is most probably faulty. This coil reads a magnet as the motor turns to detect the speed that the motor is spinning at and this in turn allows the electronic controller to set the motor to revolve at different speeds for the various program options.

E53

  • Motor triac sensing circuit faulty
  • PCB faulty
  • Cycle blocked, door locked OFF/reset

Another one that is a fault being reported on the electronic controller and not a DIY repair.

E54

  • Motor relay contacts sticking
  • PCB faulty
  • Current leakage from motor or from wiring
  • Cycle blocked, door locked (after 5 attempts) OFF/reset

As above.

E61

  • Insufficient heating during washing
  • NTC sensor faulty
  • Heating element faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • PCB faulty
  • The heating phase is skipped

Usually a heater failure but possibly the thermostat or NTC temperature sensor or wiring to either.

E62

  • Overheating during washing
  • NTC sensor faulty
  • Heating element faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • PCB faulty
  • Safety drain cycle - Cycle stopped with door open OFF/reset

As above only the heater will likely be okay but it is still possible that the wash heater is faulty.

E66

  • Heating element power relay faulty
  • PCB faulty
  • Current leakage from heating element to ground
  • Safety drain cycle - Cycle stopped with door open OFF/reset

Another one that requires an engineer, not a DIY repair.

E71

  • NTC sensor for wash cycle defective
  • Faulty NTC sensor
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main board faulty
  • Heating is skipped revert to Start

Self explanatory but do also check the wiring to the temperature probe.

E72

  • Fault in NTC sensor on drying condenser (voltage out of range = short-circuit, open circuit)
  • Drying NTC sensor (condenser) faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main circuit board faulty
  • Heating is skipped revert to Start

 

E73

  • Fault in NTC sensor on drying duct (voltage out of range = short-circuit, open circuit)
  • Drying NTC sensor (duct) faulty
  • Wiring faulty
  • Main circuit board faulty
  • Heating is skipped revert to Start

 

E74

  • NTC sensor for wash cycle improperly positioned
  • NTC sensor incorrectly positioned
  • Faulty NTC sensor
  • Wiring defective
  • Main board faulty
  • Heating is skipped revert to Start

 

E82

  • Error in selector reset position
  • PCB faulty (Wrong configuration data)
  • Selector, wiring faulty
  • OFF/reset

E83

  • Error in reading selector
  • PCB faulty (Wrong configuration data)
  • Selector, wiring
  • Cycle cancelled

E84

  • "Sensing" circuit on circulation pump triac faulty (input signal to processor always 0V or 5V)
  • PCB Drain
  • Cycle blocked (door open)
  • OFF/reset

 

E85

  • Circulation pump faulty (incongruency between status of "sensing" circuit on circulation pump and status of TRIAC)
  • Circulation pump
  • Wiring
  • Main PCB
  • Drain, cycle blocked (door open)

E91

  • Communication incongruence between main PCB- display board (versions not compatible)
  • Wiring faulty

  AEG Washing Machine Spares

We have deliberately not given links to any spares in this article and, as you may suspect from this guidance, with very good reason.

Zanussi, AEG, Tricity Bendix and all other Electrolux Group appliances are found using two key pieces of information, what the part is and the PNC number from the rating plate. We can often find them from the model number because we can eliminate multiple instances on occasion and, we know what we're looking at and for, you often won't. But, even with our knowledge even we will often need the PNC code to identify the machine correctly and, accordingly, the spares required.

Our advice is very simple, don't guess at it and end up with the wrong parts, contact us from this link and check that you are ordering the correct spares.

I have an AEG Lavamat L14840. It spins but the dryer no longer works, it doesn't get warm. There is no error code and the timer runs down very quickly. There is water flowing through the condenser.Any ideas?

my Aeg washer dryer l16830 showing e36 code have checked heating element its working cleaned out condensor see as I had the back off. The machine was starting washing for few minutes then stopping and timer resetting also dryer hasn't been working for a while. It now and again does a full wash and sometimes does nothing what else could it be?
