Zanussi Fault Codes

Zanussi washing machine fault or error codesThe Zanussi washing machines and washer dryers that these error codes relate to those that use what they call the "EWM1000plus", "EWM2000evo" and "EWM3000new" boards and it's these fault codes that we will cover in this article. These are some of the most common fault codes for Zanussi washing machine models as well as other Electrolux Group produced brands such as AEG, Arthur Martin, Tricity Bendix, John Lewis and Electrolux obviously.

If these fault codes apply to your machine is should have a fascia panel on it like one of those shown below, there are fifteen known variants covering quite literally hundreds of different models sold in the UK and across the EU.

The error code is displayed as a digital code, exactly as you will see below, you will get a blinking or flashing light on the front of the washing machine.

If it is the latter then you will see a pattern to the flashes if you look closely it will be a series of rapid flashes followed by a pause and then the series of flashes will be repeated, this is the error code being displayed. If you count the number of flashes being given then you use that number to correspond to the fault code, for example, ten flashes would be fault code A, but we will explain how to read the fault code.

Reading The Fault Code On Non-Digital Zanussi Washing Machines

Proceed as follows to read the last alarm condition stored in the EEPROM on the control board.

Irrespective of the type of control board and configuration, turn the programme selector clockwise to the tenth position. See below for details of entering diagnostics mode.

NOTE: These are the engineer codes displayed after entering the configuration/diagnostics mode.

To enter diagnostics:

  1. Switch off the appliance
  2. Press and hold down START/PAUSE and any one of the option buttons simultaneously
  3. Holding down both buttons switch the appliance on by turning the programme selector one position to the right (clockwise)
  4. Continue to hold down the START/PAUSE and option buttons until the LED begins to flash (at least 2 seconds)

In the first selector position, the operation of the buttons and the relative Led’s is checked; turning the selector knob clockwise activates the diagnostics cycle for the operation of the various components and displays any alarm conditions.

Displaying The Error Code

The alarm is displayed by a repeated flashing sequence of the two LEDs (0.4 seconds ON, 0.4 seconds OFF, with a pause of 2.5 seconds between each sequence).

The buzzer (if fitted) sounds a series of “beeps” in synchronization with the flashing of the LEDs.

"End of cycle" indicator indicates the first digit of the fault code

"Start Pause" indicator shows the second digit of the fault code

These two LEDs are present on all models (though configured in different positions) and flash simultaneously.

The first letter of the alarm code “E” (Error) is ignored as it is the same for all alarm codes.

The fault code families are expressed in hexadecimal form. In other words:

A is represented by 10 flashes

B is represented by 11 flashes

F is represented by 15 flashes

Configuration errors are displayed by the flashing of all the LEDs which means that user interface not configured and you will require an engineer to reprogram the electronic controller or replace it. This is not a DIY repair.

Example Of A Fault Code Display

Example: Alarm E43 (problems with the door safety interlock triac) will be displayed as follows:

Four flashes of the "End of cycle" indicate the first digit "4" of code E43

Three flashes of the "Start Pause" indicate the second digit, "3" of the code E43

  Zanussi Electronic Controller Replacement

Against a number of the fault codes for these machines you will see that we recommend that you get an appliance engineer to do it and that it isn't a DIY repair. The reason for this is that in order to replace many of these electronic modules it is required that the board is programmed and this is beyond the scope of a DIY repair as well as most unskilled people not involved in appliance repairs.

It is also the case that reprogramming these boards can be model specific, due to the particular features used on that washing machine or washer dryer and that incorrect installation and programming will result in a dead board. Due to the high risk of people programming the replacement board incorrectly we will not offer instructions to the general public on how to carry this out, apart from which Electrolux might get a bit upset if we did.

Most of our approved repairers and all Service Force agents will be able to carry out these sorts of repairs for you at a reasonable cost.

If they make a mistake they have to pay for a replacement board, if you make a mistake then it would be you paying for it and it's not worth the risk.

Before you start any investigation of the fault or even remove the lid of your Zanussi washing machine or washer dryer please read and fully understand this article in full and pay particular attention to the safety and information notices at the bottom of this page as they contain extremely important information!

  Zanussi Washing Machine Fault Codes

These fault codes are written for washing machine repairers and not for the general public by Electrolux and they assume a certain level of competence on the part of the user in diagnostic routines. We have added some notes to try to assist you in determining the nature of the fault you have but, you will still need to investigate each failure on its own merits. For more help and advice on fault finding on a washing machine please refer to our basic fault finding guide from this link before you begin.

Please check that any Zanussi washing machine spares recommended are suitable for use on your particular model and PNC number. If you are unsure about the suitability of any spare part please ask to ensure that you get the correct spares for your washing machine or washer dryer. Please, don't guess or assume as spares can be altered on a production run with the same model number having several different alternative components used.

Most models with the single control or display (EWM1000) PCB. The EWM2000 PCB is used on the AEG machines and there is very probably a huge crossover in the information between these two.

Difficulty in filling during wash phase

This is usually your basic filling error so the usual should be checked, that the water supply is switched on and then onto the water fill valves.

Water leakage detected

This is only applicable where a leak detection system is fitted.

Difficulties in draining, drain error

Basic drain error, check the drain pump filter is clear and also the drain pump is actually working.

Malfunction of drain pump triac

This refers to the triac that controls the pump function on the main controller.

Sensing circuit of the component (triac) that controls the drain pump faulty

As above.

Incongruous between closure of anti-boiling and 1st level contacts of pressure switch

This is a pressure switch or sensor fault and we would not recommend you attempt to DIY this fault.

Water level too high

Again, water pressure system fault and again, we wouldn't consider this to be a DIY repair.

Sensing circuit of anti-boiling pressure switch faulty

As above.

Sensing circuit of 1st level pressure switch faulty

As above

HV sensing circuit of anti-overflow pressure switch faulty

As Above

Door open, door interlock, wiring or main PCB

Usually a door lock that's faulty.

Door open

Close the door!

Problems with aperture of the door

Pretty much the same as E40 and E41 fault codes.

Problems with the triac which actions the door interlock

Again, this refers to the triac on the electronic controller and you should seek an engineer as it is not a DIY repair.

Door closure sensing circuit faulty

As E40, E41 and E42.

Problems with the sensing circuit of the triac that actions the door interlock

As E43.

Motor power triac short-circuited

Yet again, this refers to the triac on the electronic controller and not a DIY job.

No signal from the motor tachometric generator

Tacho coil on the motor is most probably faulty. This coil reads a magnet as the motor turns to detect the speed that the motor is spinning at and this in turn allows the electronic controller to set the motor to revolve at different speeds for the various program options.

Problems with the sensing circuit of the triac which powers the motor

Another one that is a fault being reported on the electronic controller and not a DIY repair.

Motor relay contacts sticking

As above.

Insufficient heating during washing

Usually a heater failure but possibly the thermostat or NTC temperature sensor or wiring to either.

Overheating during washing

As above only the heater will likely be okay.

The contacts of the heating element power relay are always closed

Another one that requires an engineer, not a DIY repair.

NTC washing sensor faulty

Self explanatory but do also check the wiring to the temperature probe.

Error in reading the RESET/OFF position of the programme selector

Another non-DIY one, you will need an engineer.

Error in reading the programme selector code

As above.

Incorrect machine configuration

As above.

Incorrect configuration of washing cycle

As above.

Communications error between microprocessor and the EEPROM

As above.

In congruence between control panel version and configuration data

As above.

In congruence between selector version and configuration data

As above.

Drum positioning system (DSP) faulty (top-loaders only)

Not really used in the UK, more for European top loading models.

Incorrect mains frequency

Check mains supply, you may require an electrician to do this for you.

Mains voltage too high

Check mains supply, you may require an electrician to do this for you.

Mains voltage too low

Check mains supply, you may require an electrician to do this for you.

  Get Zanussi Washing Machine Spares

We have deliberately not given links to any spares in this article and, as you may suspect from this guidance, with very good reason.

Zanussi, AEG, Tricity Bendix and all other Electrolux Group appliances are found using two key pieces of information, what the part is and the PNC number from the rating plate. We can often find them from the model number because we can eliminate multiple instances on occasion and, we know what we're looking at and for, you often won't. But, even with our knowledge even we will often need the PNC code to identify the machine correctly and, accordingly, the spares required.

Our advice is very simple, don't guess at it and end up with the wrong parts, contact us using the simple form below and check that you are ordering the correct spares.

Getting the correct spare part to repair your Zanussi washing machine can be very confusing as there are many variants, even with the model number it is sometimes the case that a PNC or production number will be required to ensure that you get the correct spare part as there can be up to 30 or more variants!

Apart from that there are often lower cost compatible spares available that we may be able to recommend that can offer you a considerable saving.

We recommend that you contact us with the model information and we will give you guidance on pricing, availability and any lower cost alternatives that can be used. Simply fill out the form below and we will get back to you quickly.

  More Zanussi Washing Machine Help

Should you need more help and guidance please use the links from this article as most of them will help you to understand your Zanussi washing machine or washer dryer a lot better and probably very much help you in diagnosing the fault you have. Of course there are many other articles on the site that will also help you do this.

In addition you can post in our forums after registering but please do pay heed to the information below before doing so and read the guides, they are there to help you.

You must understand certain things before you begin or attempt any repairs on your own and we want to make these points very, very clear to anyone that decides to investigate one of these or any other washing machines:

  • We are not responsible for your safety, you are and by using this guide you accept that and accept that any damage that you may cause and work undertaken is entirely at your own risk.
  • We will advise the common causes of the fault codes but we cannot guarantee that any parts or work recommended will resolve the issue. It is entirely your responsibility to diagnose your particular problem and resolve it.
  • We are not responsible for you buying spares that do not resolve the problem, this is down to your own diagnosis not ours.
  • No warranty is inferred, implied or given.

You also have to be aware that like most these Zanussi fault or error codes are not a "magic bullet", they will not tell you what the problem is, they will only offer you an indication of where the problem lies and they are no substitute for good diagnostic skills. You can find out more about what fault codes actually tell you in this article. So please be well aware that, even with this new found knowledge you will still have to actually be capable of investigating and diagnosing the problem and this means adhering to basic appliance safety for working on them.

Please do note that manufacturers can and do change fault codes without notice and we cannot guarantee that these error codes will apply to your particular model as all codes apply to a wide range of appliances and not normally any one specific model. To determine if these fault codes do apply to your particular Zanussi, AEG, Tricity Bendix or Electrolux washing machine or washer dryer model please post a request to confirm this in the forums.

the washing machine has a problem E20
it\'s full of garments of course
what do I have to do?

Error 90
Hi my zanussi jetstream 1400 FJDR 1466 W throws up an error code 90 as it goes through cycles with beeping . How cheap is it to fix it\'s an old washer

Zanussi 1300
I have a Zanussi washing machine which won\'t go past the initial filling stage before cutting out. I\'ve pressed the start key and an option key to get an error code and it gives five flashes.

Hi John,

Please use the forums for that sort of enquiry.

Zanussi Washing machine Software configuration code
Hi i have a zanussi zwh5125 PNC/ELC=914522109/00 it is a delta model with digital display. I have a new unconfigured control module for it and need to program it with the correct code. I know how to do this but i do not know what the code is for this machine. There are 2 labels on the old board plastic casing reading: PNC as above. MCF=132339980-000 CCF=132289451-008. Other label, Procond Elettronica type P.451525207 F.6495 Type E. 132381900 SW Ver. W1A30140 20/Jul/06. I gather there is some way of extracting a 16 digit code out of all that but i dont know how! Can anyone help please? Many thanks and much appreciated if anyone can in advance.
The seller of the part should be able to assist you with that.
Andrew Fuller
No display
I have a Zanussi ZWF1631W, machine has power light but no display and won\'t work. I have been unable to bring up an error despite pressing start button with other buttons, any idea how to bring up the error code?
Hi Andrew,

Please ask in the forums for diagnostic help, the technicians will not see your comments here.

Condenser drier not working
I have a Zanussi WJD 1667W , THE CLOTHS DO NOT DRY. after setting the drum turns but it does not move on to the next drying cycle. The timer does not advance?????
Dryer doesn\'t start
I believe i have a similar problem
I have a WD1215 which will start rotating, but the timer never advances (i use the drying program, when using combo it just stalls when reaching the drying section)
Upon looking at the controlunit i found soot on both sides of the board surrounding the capacitors/condensers on the board. I will go to an electrician supply store today to have the capacity of those checked as this is most likely the reason that the fan wont start so the program can progress.
I will report back when I have the outcome.
