Haier is recalling around 137,000 fridge freezer models in the USA because of a potential fire hazard. An electrical component inside the refrigerator has been found to short-circuit, which could lead to a fire.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has not reported any injuries, but it notes in the recall notice that there have been three reports of smoke, fire, and property damage related to the problem.
The refrigerators were sold at Lowe’s and independent retailers between September 2014 and September 2018. They were sold under three model numbers: HA10TG31SB, HA10TG31SS, and HA10TG31SS. To see whether your refrigerator is affected, you’ll need to pull it out and check the model number and serial number on the rating plate located on the rear panel of the refrigerator.
The CPSC recall notice provides instructions for checking your refrigerator’s serial number to determine whether it is included in the recall or not.
The recall encourages owners of the affected units to unplug and stop using these refrigerators.
Haier is providing free in-home repairs of affected units or $150 rebates toward a new Haier refrigerator.
To book a repair, go to Haier America’s recall page or call Haier at 888-364-2989.
We do not know at this point if any European models are affected.
