Capita's "Gas Safety Register" scheme replaces CORGI's registration scheme from April 1, 2009, and installers will need to be registered on the scheme to operate legally.

Installers can visit the scheme's new website www.gassaferegister.co.uk launched a few days ago, and from January 19 CORGI registered businesses can get their registration renewed online.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) today announced that it has selected Capita as its preferred bidder to run the new registration scheme for gas installers from 1 April 2009. This will replace the scheme currently operated by CORGI.

Wolseley the parts and fittings supplier who also own Parts Center is promoting further gas safety by refusing to sell to anyone attempting to buy a safety critical gas part that is not CORGI-registered.

From 1st January all branches of Parts Center and Plumb Center, part of the Wolseley group, will only sell these parts to CORGI-registered members. Installers visiting any of Parts Center's 200 branches must show their CORGI ID card if they want to buy 'safety critical' gas parts.

The CORGI Trust and the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) are apparently in talks about a possible merger.

The two organisations are amongst the most important and respected safety bodies in the gas and electricity sectors and a merger would create a powerful new voice spanning the two industries.

NAPIT has announced it will be entering the bid to take over the Gas Safety Registration Scheme from Corgi, the current national watchdog for gas safety.

NAPIT already runs Competent Persons Schemes across the electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation sectors, was appointed by the Department of Local Communities and Government and is also registered with TrustMark.

The new scheme is set to bring benefits to both gas consumers and gas installers across Great Britain.

Health and Safety Minister, Lord McKenzie of Luton welcomed the proposal, "This is a major opportunity to re-energize domestic gas safety which is aimed at decreasing gas related incidents in the coming years. I particularly welcome the new responsibility to co-ordinate industry actions on raising public awareness on gas safety. I call upon industry and all those interested in gas safety to work in partnership with HSE to make these changes work and deliver real benefits to consumers and gas installers."

CORGI Group, the UK's gas safety watchdog, is to install a Siebel Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to help its field inspectors, track compliance and manage its membership.

Working on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive, CORGI is hoping the solution will improve communications and service consistency and make it more efficient. Officially the solution is now part of the Oracle brand and has been implemented by Aspective, a specialist is CRM and field service automation.
