Matsui Appliances

Matsui logo

Matsui is a own label brand name that has been owned and operated by Currys (Dixons Retail) for a number of years from the 1980's but seems to be currently retired.

The name was apparently chosen as it sounded Japanese lulling consumers into thinking that they were buying quality produced Japanese made products whcih was likely more driven by the brand name's use in browngoods such as televisions, video recorders and so on. This was, at the time, backed by the strap-line of "Japanese Technology Made Perfect" by Currys as well as the use of a logo incorporating the Rising Sun.

Currys were later to be found by a British Court as misleading advertising and Currys were ordered to drop the strap-line as well as pay a fine. Currys were however allowed to keep the Matsui name and continued to trade with it for own label products.

  Matsui Market Position

The own brand label was used for budget range products typically of low cost Chinese and Turkish origins the best that we can tell and quality can be suspect, especially so on dishwashers.

  Matsui Service

At the time of writing not much is known about service for Matsui products, including who carries out service for the company although we think much was being done by repaircare. However we strongly suspect that it will be carried out by Currys own KnowHow service as soon as possible.

  Matsui Spare Parts

Like service, not much is known about the arrangements for spare parts other than that it would appear that Connect Distribution (CDSL) appears to have exclusivity to the brand's spares in so far as appliances go. Supply of spare parts seems to be limited to the one distributor and spares prices seem to be high given the low cost appliances.

Matsui Freezer & TV
I have a Matsui freezer dating from 1985 and still going strong. The seals are a little the worse for wear so the door is held tight with a bungee, but never a problem with anything else. I also have a small Matsui TV dating from 1993 and a CD player from not much later, and never a hint of a problem with either!

Mrs Heather McCabe
Dear Sir/Madam,
In December 1991 I bought a Matsui microwave oven No .M175TC from my local store in Grantham.
It was only last week that I had to take it to the tip after a long and loyal service to my family.
I just wanted to give you positive feedback about one of your many products.
Thank you for developing such a robust and reliable microwave that faithfully worked for us each day!
Kind regards from, Mrs Heather McCabe.
