  Refrigeration Warranty

What isn't covered by a warranty and why for refrigeration

american side by side fridge freezerAlmost all manufacturer warranties and most extended warranties as well as insurance cover will normally afford you protection from electrical or mechanical breakdown on a fridge, freezer or fridge freezer just as they will on other appliances.

However, it is important to keep in mind that this is all that is covered unless it is stated otherwise.

Here we will highlight the top issues that cause debates and even arguments over who is going to foot the bill however the points are not exhaustive and will vary from brand to brand although they will offer you a good idea of what to expect.

A lot of this is just simple common sense and most people that are reasonable understand that manufacturers and warranty companies simply cannot guarantee any product, never mind just fridge freezers, against every possibility.

Remember that no warranty covers everything and that there can be many exclusions to any warranty, calling out someone to resolve an issue that is not covered by your guarantee will almost certainly mean you have to pay for that service!

  Mains Voltage And Supply

A fridge freezer manufacturer will not be responsible for the mains voltage in your home, that's up to you to make sure is correct.

If your fridge freezer is faulty due to this then chances are that, unless the manufacturer is being extremely generous, that you will get a bill for finding that out for you.

Often we see problems not only with people's home wiring not being what we would say was good but also fridge freezers on extension cords and so on that are not good enough.

  Water Supply & Drainage

Again, the fridge freezer manufacturer is not responsible and it is up to the homeowner to ensure that both the your water supply (where you need it for water and ice dispensers) and drainage meets the installation requirements and are adequate for your fridge freezer. If it doesn't and an engineer has to call to tell you this, even without being able to resolve the issue then you will almost certainly get a bill for that.

It is very common to have blocked drains on the drain channel at the back of many fridge sections of a fridge freezer and in self defrosting fridges. It is inevitable that something has found its way into that drain channel or hose and blocked it up which is not considered a manufacturing defect.

  Installation

If your fridge freezer has not been installed correctly, for example the supplies connected properly, not correctly levelled and so on then the warranty will not cover this. You will get a bill for any remedial work and, if there is damage caused by improper installation of the fridge freezer, you will have to pay to get it repaired, even when brand new.

It is the same story where you install your fridge freezer into an unsuitable location.

For example, an area of high humidity that causes electronic to fail or rust to form, that will not be covered by the warranty.

Same again if the fridge freezer is installed in an unsuitable environment such as a garage, outbuilding, conservatory and so forth as the temperatures in these places will almost surely fall outside the design parameters.

If damage is caused by improper installation and, in extreme cases it can render the fridge freezer unrepairable, it will not be covered by your guarantee leaving you with the bill not only for the replacement but, often also the engineer calling to tell you that it was unrepairable.

With integrated products installation is vital to the correct operation of your fridge freezer, fridge or freezer and when it is not installed properly and remedial action needs carried out the service engineer will invoice you for this work. In turn, you have to claim that cost back from the installer of the product that did not install it correctly.

  Shelves & Trays

It is not unusual to find a fridge freezer manufacturer not prepared to offer much guarantee on trays and shelves in a fridge freezer because they are usually damaged through people being a little too heavy handed or, from over icing due to a failure to defrost on schedule.

Many manufacturers won't bother too much about this and will replace these parts but there are others that will not offer to replace these under warranty.

Also watch this where you have an extended warranty as some will not cover what is known in the trade as door furniture or cabinet furniture whcih means shelves, trays and so on.

  Water & Air Filters

No manufacturer that uses a fridge freezer water filter or air filter will offer any warranty on these as they are considered to be consumable items that will need replaced on a regular basis.

Any guarantee offered on these types of spare parts will be very limited.

  No Fault Found

No warranty covers no fault being found on a fridge freezer.

You will almost certainly be charged if you have an engineer call and they can find no fault.

  Electrical And Mechanical

Most warranties will guarantee against electrical and mechanical failure but that really is all that they will normally cover. So if a component in your fridge freezer fails through normal use or due to a manufacturing defect and so on then it will be repaired under the warranty but, anything else and all bets are off.

If it is something that you are doing wrong or, you've not installed the dishwasher correctly etc then your warranty will not cover it in all probability.

Of course manufacturers and warranty companies could cover everything and, some extended warranties do but they are very expensive. To add cover for almost everything a manufacturer would have to put the prices up, quite likely significantly, to cover the additional costs.

Most however, to keep initial purchase prices low, take these costs out even on more expensive products as, putting these costs in would only make them still more expensive.

One of the largest causes for needless service calls is people getting used to new appliances that work differently from their old ones. New appliances are very energy efficient and many technologies have changed over the years meaning that your new machine may operate very differently from an older model.
