Smeg dishwasher fault codes and spare partsThese fault or error codes used in a wide range of Smeg integrated or fully built in dishwasher models that have and LCD display and five buttons for programs and features, usually on the top of the dishwasher door and most of them use the same fault or error codes when they have a problem or a part fails. Please note that these can differ slightly from other Smeg dishwasher versions that use the same sort of fault code indication.

The Smeg fault codes for the dishwasher models that use these fault codes are displayed as alphanumeric codes exactly as shown below.

Before you start any investigation of the fault on your Smeg dishwasher please read and fully understand this article in full and pay particular attention to the safety and information notices at the bottom of this page as they contain extremely important information!

Please remember to support our site by buying Smeg spares from our spare part store here and, if you decide that you really need an engineer please support the local repairers that help make this site possible, you can search for a repairer from this link.

  Smeg Dishwasher Fault Codes

Like other fault codes these written for dishwasher repairers and not for the general public by Smeg and UK Whitegoods and they assume a certain level of competence on the part of the user in diagnostic routines. We have added some notes to try to assist you in determining the nature of the fault you have but, you will still need to investigate each failure on its own merits. For more help and advice on fault finding on a dishwasher please refer to our basic fault finding guide from this link before you begin.

Please check that any Smeg dishwasher spares recommended are suitable for use on your particular model and production code or serial number. If you are unsure about the suitability of any spare part please ask to ensure that you get the correct spares for your washing machine. Please, don't guess or assume as spares can be altered on a production run with the same model number having several different alternative components used.

E1

Dishwasher detects overfilling

The dishwasher has detected that there is too much water in the machine and some models may activate an emergency drain down procedure.

  • Check level sensor
  • Check fill chamber
  • Check main electronic control module

E2

Water level fault detected in the dishwasher

The dishwasher has determined that there is too much water in the dishwasher but the fault code will not pinpoint any specific component failure.

However, an E2 error can be caused by a number of different things and is often down to a simple blockage in the side fill chamber. Please refer to this article for specific advice on the E2 error.

  • Check side fill chamber for blockages
  • Check pressure sensor
  • Check flow meter where fitted
  • Check water inlet valve
  • Check sump for blockage
  • Check for signs of oversoaping

E3

No heating detected

The dishwasher has detected that there is a fault on the heating circuit which could mean the heating element, thermostats or wiring.

If the overheat thermostat has tripped check for a cause, this can be caused for example by a piece of cutlery laying on the heater and thermostat causing the thermostat to read an overheat.

  • Check heater is not open circuit or shorted
  • Check all thermostats
  • Check wiring to heater and thermostats

E4

Thermistor or thermostat error detected

On models that use an electronic sensor known as a thermistor to detect the water temperature, the dishwasher has detected an error with the reading from this sensor.

For models with a thermostat the same applies.

  • Check thermistor or thermostat
  • Check contacts are sound and clean to the thermistor where fitted
  • Check wiring
  • Check main control module

E5

Dishwasher fails to fill

The dishwasher has either failed to fill or failed to fill in the allotted time.

  • Check level sensor
  • Check fill chamber
  • Check main electronic control module

E6

Dishwasher fails to drain

The dishwasher has either failed to fill with water completely or, it has timed out on the fill stage of the program.

  • Check water supply is adequate for operation
  • Check that fill hose filter is not blocked
  • Check water valve
  • Check wiring
  • Check main control module

E7

Turbo drying system failure

The dishwasher has detected a fault with the drying system.

  • Check fan motor
  • Check heating element
  • Check wiring
  • Check main control module

E8

Changeover or alternating valve faulty

This error is displayed when the dishwasher detects an error on the changeover valve that allows the half load function on the dishwasher.

The valve is a component located at the spray arm and is in effect a diverter that directs the water flow to the upper, lower or both baskets.

Usually when this error is displayed that valve is indeed faulty.

E9

As E1 error code

This is the same error code is the same as the E1 error code on Smeg dishwasher models that have the turbo drying feature but unused on other models.

More Smeg Dishwasher Help, Advice & Guidance

Should you need more help and guidance please use the links from this article as most of them will help you to understand your Smeg dishwasher a lot better and probably very much help you in diagnosing the fault you have. Of course there are many other articles on the site that will also help you do this.

In addition you can post in our help and advice forums after registering but please do pay heed to the information below before doing so and read the guides, they are there to help you. But if you are in any doubt at all or don't think you are up to diagnosing the fault yourself please use our Engineer Search to find a local dishwasher engineer.

You must understand certain things before you begin or attempt any repairs on your own and we want to make these points very, very clear to anyone that decides to investigate one of these or any other dishwashers:

  • We are not responsible for your safety, you are and by using this guide you accept that and accept that any damage that you may cause and work undertaken is entirely at your own risk.
  • We will advise the common causes of the fault codes but we cannot guarantee that any parts or work recommended will resolve the issue. It is entirely your responsibility to diagnose your particular problem and resolve it.
  • We are not responsible for you buying spares that do not resolve the problem, this is down to your own diagnosis not ours.
  • No warranty is inferred, implied or given.

Please understand that these Smeg dishwasher fault or error codes are not a "magic bullet", they will not tell you what the problem is, they will only offer you an indication of where the problem lies and they are no substitute for good old fashioned diagnostic skills. You can find out more about what fault codes actually tell you in this article. So please be well aware that, even with this new found knowledge you will still have to actually be capable of investigating and diagnosing the problem and this means adhering to basic appliance safety for working on them.

Please do note that manufacturers can and do change fault codes without notice and we cannot guarantee that these error codes will apply to your particular model as all codes apply to a wide range of appliances and not normally any one specific model. To determine if these fault codes do apply to your particular Smeg dishwasher model please post a request to confirm this in the forums.

Hi my smeg DI6012 wont start
No error codes showing. when I press the programme button with the on/off button it does 1 beep and the 4th light stays on and can not change programme, dishwasher doesn\'t run when I close the door. Any ideas please

Kenneth
Hi Andrew,

That sounds more like the five LED codes than these ones.

For diagnostic help on your Smeg dishwasher though you would be far better to ask for help in the forums where the repair technicians will see the request, they will not see it here.

Where can I find All the fault codes for Smeg model DWI612C?It has a main inn/off button and a programme selector button plus 5 LEDs indicating which programme is selected. The error code showing is not in the handbook. Thank you.
