  Tumble Dryer Filters

Removing your tumble dryer filter to clean it is easy

Essentially there are two different types of tumble dryer so far as domestic tumble dryers are concerned at any rate, vented tumble dryers and self-condensing tumble dryers.

Both have a lint or fluff filter on them as this is essential to stop fluff and lint from getting into the outer cabinet that holds the drum and importantly the heating element. This must be cleaned after or before every use.

Condenser dryers also have a condensing unit that needs to be cleaned regularly which you can find out more about here.

This is a stern warning that we cannot emphasise highly enough:

Tumble Dryer Filters Are A Safety Device

Not cleaning your tumble dryer filter can create a serious fire risk!

The filter in your tumble dryer, usually at the door and easily accessible, should be cleaned either before or after every single use and a failure to do so will not only create the aforementioned fire risk but can also lead to thermostat failure and other issues.

It is imperative that you do this in line with the manufacturer instructions.

It is easy and takes less than a minute to do.

Field service engineers and assessors aren’t stupid, they know all the signs and can almost always tell where the filter/s haven’t been cleaned regularly and, if you have a problem even in warranty caused by a failure to do this you could well find the costs not being covered. Worse, if there is an incident then you might find that you’ve not a leg to stand on with any claim as, you've not followed the guidance.

For the sake of your tumble dryer, your home and potentially your life, keep them clean, clear and fully operational.

Why Your Dryer Filter Is So Important

A tumble dryer blocked up with fluff from a faulty or not maintained filterThe filter traps the fluff, lint and ooze that comes off your laundry items in a very fine mesh preventing it from being drawn though the airflow of the tumble dryer and ultimately to the heating element. But, it can only cope with so much before it becomes ineffective allowing excess fluff to be drawn by other means into the cabinet and, onto the heater.

We hope you got the potential for disaster if this vital component is not maintained from the above.

Any holes in the filter, it not placed in correctly or not cleaned will stop it from doing the job that it should do correctly and you can end up with something like the image to the right.

You can see why it's a fire risk!

That fluff or ooze is tinder dry and, even a slight flame or a decent heat will set it on fire.

As soon as they get blocked up the airflow of the tumble dryer is not ideal at all. The air moves more slowly and where it shouldn’t which will in turn affect the performance of the tumble dryer. This means that with a blocked filter most people will be burning a lot more energy than they should be, in effect paying for the error of their ways through massively higher electricity use.

So in summary, the filter is so important as it can be a safety issue and not only that but, it can also be costing you a fortune in electricity if it isn’t maintained and functional as it should be. That’s why it’s so important.

Ignore it at your peril.

  Damaged Tumble Dryer Filters

The trouble with damaged filters, where they get a hole in them or the mesh starts to come away from the surround, is that when this happens it will let fluff, lint and ooze through into the dryer even faster and more easily than a blocked filter.

It’s therefore really important to make sure that the filter is okay, sound, doesn’t have any holes and is doing what it should be doing.

You can also get them caked with solidified detritus at times and, that’s just the same as them being blocked.

You can attempt to clean them or patch them up but, realistically, normally the only real solution is to replace the filter.

  Ordering A Replacement Filter

We see this a lot and, it’s a bit of advice we seem to give people constantly… One filter looks like another, looks like another in a good many cases.

Some are easily recognisable but some have subtle changes that make them unique to a range or series of tumble dryer models. If you don’t see yours listed or you’re not sure then please, ask us before you order the replacement. We’re only too happy to assist you and it can save you a lot of hassle.

The most commonly used filters you will find in our online store but, please do take note of the above as it can be very confusing when it comes to parts and easy to go wrong, that’s why we offer to help.
