Dye bleeding across garments washed in a washing machine

  Appearance

Colour has bled from various parts of the garment after being cleaned in a washing machine. Other garments in the load may have been marked, either by the original dye or a component of the original (e.g. blue colour from purple garment).

This is not a problem caused by a fault with your washing machine unless the temperature is not correct for the wash which could indicate a thermostat problem.

However generally this is caused by people simply selecting the incorrect wash temperature to wash the item in.

Please see the notes below for more information.

  Treatment

Re-dying may restore the original colour.

Cause & Prevention

The garment is not washed according to the symbols on the fabric care label. Colours will bleed if the wash temperature is too hot.

Always check the fabric care label for the manufacturers washing recommendations

  Cause

The garment has unstable dyes that need special care

  Prevention

If in doubt test for colour fastness of the dye prior to washing. If the garment is not colour fast it should be washed separately.
